Jednocześnie fabuła wszystkich jest ze sobą połączona, dlatego najlepszym wyjściem jest ukończenie kampanii w kolejności zaproponowanej przez twórców. Główne założenia pozostały te same. W dalszym ciągu gracze wcielają się w rolę jednego z lordów toczących bezpardonową walkę o ustabilizowanie swych rządów w krainie Nevendaar. Ich zadaniem jest podróżowanie po rozległych krainach, zbieranie surowców, rozbudowywanie zamków (w tempie jednego elementu na dzień), oraz zdobywanie doświadczenia poprzez wygrywanie potyczek. Postać dowodząca armię została potraktowana w zupełnie nowy, zbliżony do RPG-owego, sposób. Mamy do czynienia z oknem ekwipunku, punktami statystyk itp. Każdy element pancerza, broń i używane przedmioty są odzwierciedlone na wizerunku bohatera. Po zdobyciu nowego doświadczenia możemy samodzielnie rozwijać poszczególne statystyki i umiejętności. Walka rozgrywana jest tradycyjnie w systemie turowym, jednak i tu występują duże zmiany. Przede wszystkim oddziały żołnierzy zyskały możliwość przemieszczania się po polu walki (w poprzednich częściach musiały pozostać w miejscu, w którym rozpoczęły bitwę). Mocno rozszerza to dostępne dla graczy możliwości taktyczne. Znikły również znane z poprzednich części różdżki. Obecnie, chcąc poszerzyć własne włości, musimy zdać się na strażników granicznych. Są to specjalne jednostki, które możemy umieszczać na rozmieszczonych na mapie węzłach mocy. Po dokonaniu tego dany rejon dołącza do naszego imperium. Do dyspozycji mamy kilka trybów gry: kampanie, pojedyncze potyczki i grę wieloosobową w trybie gorącego krzesła.
